About Nirmala Province

A family of faith rooted in Venniyoor, reaching the world

On 22nd August 2002, following the extraordinary General Synaxis, St. Joseph’s Province, Marthandom was restructured — and Nirmala Province, Venniyoor was born.

Today 156 sisters serve in 30 communities stretching from the south of Thiruvananthapuram district to Palakkad, Idukki and Ernakulam, the mission lands of Andhra Pradesh, and on to Germany and the United States.

Our Founders

Founded in 1938 at Marthandom

Born of a missionary’s love for the poor and the marginalised, the Daughters of Mary continue the vision of their founders.

Founder

Msgr. Joseph Kuzhinjalil

24 May 1903 – 23 August 1983

A zealous missionary who left his home in Pravithanam to serve the poor of Marthandom, and founded the Daughters of Mary on 8th May 1938.

Rev. Mother Mary Kallarackal

17 April 1898 – 30 July 1985

Co-Foundress of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, who walked with the founder in shaping its first community of sisters.

Nirmala Province has grown and flourished under the leadership of its provincial superiors — Sr. Vimala, Sr. Mary Georgia, Sr. Udaya, Sr. Lydia, Sr. Karunya and today Sr. Francita Mathew.
